NREM SLEEP
Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep (NREM) is consists of four stages, with each stage progressively deeper than the previous one. Stage 1 is the lightest stage, while stage 4 is the deepest and most restorative stage. During NREM sleep, the body repairs and regenerates tissues, builds bone and muscle, and strengthens the immune system.

REM SLEEP
Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is a stage of sleep characterized by rapid eye movements, increased brain activity, and increased blood flow to the brain. During REM sleep, the body becomes paralyzed, and the person is unable to move. The brain’s activity changes during the different stages of sleep, and it can be measured using electroencephalograph (EEG), which records the brain’s electrical activity.

AGING AND SLEEP
Aging and sleeping are interconnected, as changes in sleep patterns and quality often occur with advancing age – leading to altered patterns, lesser deep sleep, and increased difficulties in falling and staying asleep. Older adults face more sleep disruptions, like sleep apnoea and restless leg syndrome. Changes in the internal clock also disrupt sleep schedules, affecting health and well-being.
